The works of architect and designer Gajanan Upadhyay, also well known as GU, have been widely appreciated for its simplicity, finesse and ‘construction aesthetics’. GU graduated as an architect from MS University (Vadodara) and furthered his studies in furniture design at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen). Before setting up his own design practice in Copenhagen, GU worked in India with Architect Asarpota and the Government of Gujarat as an architect, followed by his appointment at National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad) as a designer and educator. Since his return from Copenhagen in 1974, he rejoined NID as a senior faculty as well as took up consultancy work on diverse kinds of design projects.
Born and brought up in Sarsav village (near Mehsana) GU explores various stories from his earlier days as an architect, to working with international designers. Sixties being the golden years of design, GU shares his experiences of working and learning with eminent professionals like Ray and Charles Eames, Louis Kahn, George Nakashima, Poul Kjærholm, Nils Fagerholt, Bo Bonfils, Jens Moeller Jensen, Hans Gugelot and many others.
